Welcome to Anchorage Youth Court. Your sentencing

your sentence or how to complete it, please contact the
Case Coordinator.

What is Community Service?

Community service is unpaid work that creates positive change to the
environment and community. It is a way to pay back society for the harm an
individual has caused. Examples include shoveling driveways and picking up trash
from the local park. You are not limited to the recommended service sites; feel free
to find your own sites. The only requirements are that you are not being paid to
complete the work and the activities are not your typical house chores.
Places like
nonprofits, churches, schools, and parks are always in need of assistance from
community members.

What are suspended hours?

AYC sentences may include suspended community work service
hours. The judges may choose to suspend hours for a variety of
reasons. Suspended community work service hours do not have
to be completed. They are deducted from the total number of
community work service hours. For example, if the judges order
20 community work service hours but suspend 5 of the hours,
the person sentenced only has to complete 15 hours.

Optional Sentences

AYC sentences may include optional items. In most instances, the
sentence gives the person sentenced the choice of serving the
whole amount of community work service hours ordered or
serving a lesser number of hours and attending an optional class,
program, or counseling/therapy. For example, a sentence may
offer the option to have 6 community work service hours
suspended (that is, deducted) for taking a 3-4 hour online class.
Whether to do the full number of community work service hours,
or take the class and do fewer community work service hours, is
up to the person sentenced.

Family and asset building hours

If you were sentenced to family work service and/or asset building hours, use this link to access more specific instructions for your sentence (Pre-teen Court only). If you are unsure if this applies to you, please call (907) 274-5986 and ask for the case coordinator, or email the case coordinator at coordinator@anchoragyouthcourt.org.

The Anchorage Public Library is offering a series of Teen Life Skills Classes on a wide range of topics, including CPR and first aid, job interviewing, bike repair, and personal finance. Anyone going into grades 7-12 is welcome to attend. You can see the schedule of these workshops by clicking on this link: Teen Life Skills Series - Anchorage Public Library (anchoragelibrary.org)

For every hour you spend in these workshops, we will credit you for two hours of community work service. Please make sure to bring your community work service log to each workshop to have an adult sign off on the hours you complete. Put a star next to these hours, so I know to credit you double! Your community work service log is located in your sentencing packet. I am also attaching a PDF of the log to this email. Note: You do NOT need to tell anyone at the workshop that you are completing community work service as part of your sentence. You can simply say that you are looking to get community work service hours for an organization that you are involved in😊
