Pre-teen Court & ASD Middle School Students 

Pre-teen court family and asset hours

Family and asset building hours are assigned to Pre-teen defendants who may be too young to participate at traditional community work service sites.

You are expected to contact the Case Coordinator every Monday to report the status of your sentence completion.

Family Work Service Hours

​Family work service is like community work service. It is the youth’s chance to pay society back for what they did but, because these youth are usually too young for community work service, the family oversees these hours. This can be work for the youth’s family or for someone else the family chooses. It can also be community work service the family arranges or does with the youth.

Developmental Asset Building Hours

Developmental assets are the positive values, relationships, skills and experiences that help young people thrive. Young people with high asset levels are most likely to make healthy choices, while those with lower asset levels are more likely to get involved with negative or risky behaviors like violence, trouble in school, drug and alcohol use and more.

​Part of your sentence is to spend a specified number of hours building developmental hours. The primary goal is for you to build positive relationships or acquire new skills.

Here are some sample ideas for asset-building activities you could do, but youth are not limited to these options.

1. Participate in Boys and Girls Club activities.
2. Participate in Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, or Campfire (must be a new project or badge, not just regularly scheduled meetings).
3. Learn or play music beyond what is already doing.
4. Participate in church youth groups.
5. Learn or play new sports
6. Engage in specific positive activities with siblings, parents, step-parents, or neighbors
7. Read (unless reading is already a regular activity for the defendant)
8. Participate in museum activities
9. Engage in new art-related activities
10. Participate in new activities at the Spenard Rec Center, Mountain View Community Center,Fairview Community Center, or Muldoon Community Center
11. Spend hours going to parent’s job and learning what parent does at work
12. Tutor a younger child, or receive tutoring from another person
13. Join a new school activity
14. Organize a family night.

Essay Instructions

You are hereby ordered to write a         word essay. (One and two letter words like “I” or “a” or “we” do not count toward the word total.)
The essay will be divided into five parts:

​A. What you did wrong.
B. How what you did hurt you, your family, the victim(s) and anyone else involved.
C. What you learned from attending your hearing and doing the other parts of your sentence
(example: family work service, asset building hours.)
D. What you would do different in the future if you found yourself in the same circumstance.
