Community Engagement

What counts as community engagement?

Community engagement is unpaid work that creates some sort of positive change to you, the environment, or your community.

It is a way to make steps towards repairing the harm an individual has caused.

Examples include:
  • Helping neighbors (shoveling driveways, mowing lawns, etc.)
  • Helping the environment (picking up trash from the local park)
  • Traditional Volunteering (see list of recommended community service sites)
  • Educational classes or training (outside of regular school)
  • Engaging with community programs (see list of recommended groups/programs
  • Attending therapy/counseling

You are not limited to these options or recommended service sites; feel free to find your own opportunities. The only big requirement is that you are not being paid to complete the work and that the activities are not your typical house chores.

Where can I find community engagement opportunities?

Places like nonprofits, churches, schools, and parks are always in need of assistance from community members. I have also put together this list of a few places if you need help getting started with your hours.

You can also engage with community programs as a part of completing your hours. These programs include options that provide you with various resources or connections in the community.

Please reach out to me if you have any questions, or would like help finding other opportunities to get hours. Scroll down for a calendar with some upcoming service opportunities.

How do I track my hours?

Please make sure to keep track of all of your hours in your log. Have a supervising adult (or guardian, if you are completing your hours where there is no supervisor) sign off on all your hours you complete. Send your log to me to let me know as you are completing your hours.

If you are completing your hours through an AYC event, you do not need to have those signed off, but do include them in your log!

What does it mean if one of my requirements is optional?

Your requirements might include optional items. This means you can complete the whole amount of community engagement hours ordered, or complete a lesser number of hours by attending an optional class or program.

For example, an individual may be offered the option to have 6 community engagement hours suspended (that is, deducted) for taking a 3-4 hour online class.

Whether to do the full number of community engagement hours, or take the class and do fewer hours, is completely up to you.

Classes

You may have been recommend (or required) to take a class or workshop as part of your requirements. You can find information about those classes here!

Essay Assignment

You will have to complete an essay as part of your requirements. You can find the directions for the essay assignment here. If you have difficulty completing your essay for any reason, or even just need help getting started please reach out to me!

Youth and Parent Surveys

These are extremely useful and help us continue doing the work we do! Because of this, each client survey and parent survey counts as 1 hour of community engagement. You can complete the surveys in your packet, or complete them online.
